Golden Eagle Men Burn Dragons 77-65 in Final Game of the Season

(Moorhead, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team traveled to MSU Moorhead on Saturday, February 28 to close out the 2008-09 regular season. The Golden Eagles fell to the Dragons on January 17, 64-50, but a reenergized UMC squad shot 50% from the field in the game to down the Dragons 77-65 in front of 678 Moorhead fans. Minnesota, Crookston took an early lead and only relinquished it twice through 40 minutes of play. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 20 points with 10:08 remaining and held off a late Moorhead run in the NSIC victory. UMC dominated down low, scoring 34 points in the paint to Moorhead’s 18. Rebounding was the leading contributor in the victory as the Golden Eagles out-rebounded MSUM 45-31. UMC grabbed 18 offensive boards and scored 24 second chance points to MSUM’s nine. Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) scored 24 points and grabbed and career high 15 rebounds for the only double-double of the game. Against Mary on February 25, he tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds for consecutive double-double games. On the week, Cubie averaged a double-double with 20.5 points/game and 13.5 rebounds/game. He averaged 36 minutes/game, shot 54% (17-31) from the field, dished five assists, blocked one shot and stole two passes. Cubie led the Golden Eagles this season with a 13.3 points/game average. Dustin Rahja (C, 6-6, 230, JR, Floodwood, Minn.) scored a career-high 20 points. He was 7-11 from the field and 6-8 from the free-throw line and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Rahja led all players with three steals in 24 minutes of play. Delano Robinson (G, 6-2, 190, JR, Bloomington, Ill.) closed out the top UMC scorers with 16 points on 6-16 shooting. MSU Moorhead was led by Justyn Burgess’ 17 points. He was 5-12 from the field, 7-11 from the free-throw line, dished three assists and recorded a team-high two steals. Grant Fossum followed Burgess with 13 points and three assists. The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 5-22 overall and 3-17 in NSIC play. MSU Moorhead falls to 10-16 overall and 6-14 in the NSIC.
