Upper Iowa Sweeps Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.) – Upper Iowa University took advantage of seven University of Minnesota, Crookston errors in game one and rallied from a run down in the night cap to sweep the Golden Eagles today in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action in Fayette, Iowa. The Peacocks captured game one 11-2 and game two 7-6.
Game One Recap
U of M, Crookston opened up a 2-0 lead before Upper Iowa tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the second. The Peacocks exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth with only three hits but five Golden Eagle errors. Upper Iowa added a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to win the game 11-2. Jarrod Esquibel and Lucas Wilsing each had two hits and an RBI for the Peacocks. Wilsing hit a solo homerun while Brock Spangenberg added a three-run homerun. Devin Croal (Fr, IF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Casey Woodside (Fr, C, Albert Lea, Minn.) each added a hit and an RBI for the Golden Eagles. Brain Solemsaas picked up the win for Upper Iowa allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked three. Kyle Kovnesky (Fr, LHP, Coleman, Wis.) took the loss for U of M, Crookston. He threw 3.2 innings allowing seven runs (only one earned) on five hits. He struck out two and walked three.
Game Two Recap
Upper Iowa University rallied from a 4-3 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held on for a 7-6 victory over the Golden Eagles. Kreston Albright had two hits and an RBI for the Peacocks. Tom Longoni had a hit and two RBI while Spangenberg added two hits and two RBI. Poehler had three hits including a two-run homer for U of M, Crookston. Woodside had a hit and two RBI, Tyler Reiner (Sr, C, Sanborn, Minn.) had two hits and an RBI and Croal had two hits. Danny Bales threw 5.1 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out six and walked none but did not get the win. U of M, Crookston’s Andrew Gunderson (Fr, RHP, Oakdale, Minn.) threw five innings allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked four.
Upper Iowa University improves to 8-15 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 3-21 and 1-9 in the NSIC. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 12 p.m.
