(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Department held its annual athletic awards program and dinner on Monday, April 20 in Kiehle Auditorium on the Minnesota, Crookston campus. The event honored the 2008-2009 senior class, recognized the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year and individual team award recipients.

Nicole Veres & Cody Brekken |
Earning Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year honors were Cody Brekken (So., Linebacker, Crookston, Minn.) and Nicole Veres (Jr., Hunt Seat, Random Lake, Wis.) Brekken was tenth on the Golden Eagle Football team in tackles with 40 total tackles (15 solo/25 assisted). He added one tackle for a loss, one sack and one pass break-up. On campus, Brekken is a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Crookston Student Association (CSA). He attended the National Student Athlete Development Conference and the Pay It Forward Tour for Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF). Brekken is a sport & recreation management major and has a 3.378 GPA. Veres is the 2008-09 captain of the Hunt Seat team. She was a double-qualifier for the Regional Championships at UW-River Falls. She placed third in the region in Novice Flat and scored 52 points throughout the season. Veres is a pre-veterinary medicine major and currently holds a 3.826 GPA.

Paul Krebs & Amanda Peterson |
The 2008-2009 Male and Female Outstanding Athletes of the Year were Paul Krebs (Sr., OF/P, Little Falls, Minn.) and Amanda Peterson (Jr., Western Team, Rochester, Minn.). Krebs has started in all 25 games so far this season. He leads the team in runs scored with 21 and is second on the team in RBI’s with 14. Peterson is a co-captain of the Western team. She was the overall Western high point rider in the region and qualified for Nationals in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on April 23-26. Peterson double-qualified for regionals in horsemanship and reining and was the high point or reserve high point rider in eight shows. She scored 75 points, good for top point earner recognition on the team and in the region. Peterson is also a member of SAAC.
The 2008-09 Male and Female Newcomer of the Year nominees were announced at the awards program. Male finalists include Casey Woodside (Fr., Baseball, Albert Lea, Minn.), Jeff Schiller (Fr., Football, Lakeside, Calif.), Jon Blazek (Fr., Men’s Golf, Owatonna, Minn.) and Nigel Smith (Fr., Hockey, White Rock, B.C.). Female finalists are Megan Eul (Fr., Women’s Basketball, Rosemount, Minn.), Kelsey Sherman (Fr., Equestrian, Lansing, Mich.), Justine Jones (Jr., Women’s Soccer, Richland, Wash.) and Cassie Jarvis (Fr., Women’s Tennis, Sleepy Eye, Minn.). The winners of the Male and Female Newcomer of the Year Award will be announced at halftime of the Golden Eagle Football homecoming game on Saturday, October 3 against Northern State University.
