CROOKSTON, MN (October 3, 2006) – A reception celebrating women student athletes at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will take place on Oct. 11, 2006, at 5 p.m. in the lobby outside of the Lysaker Gymnasium. Campus and community members will have the opportunity to honor the athletes, recognize their contributions and find out how to support women Golden Eagles. Special guests at the reception include University of Minnesota First Lady Susan Hagstrum and Board of Regents Vice Chair Patricia Simmons.
The festivities include team introductions, signed posters, door prizes and a brief program at 5:30 p.m. The concession stand will also be open and all proceeds will support the UMC women’s athletic scholarship fund. More than 40% of the athletes on campus are women who participate in seven sports including softball, soccer, golf, volleyball, basketball, equestrian and tennis.
“We are very excited and honored to have First Lady Susan Hagstrum and Regent Simmons help us recognize the achievements of our women athletes,” Athletic Director Stephanie Helgeson said. “We encourage the community to embrace this opportunity to hear from these two dedicated women and learn more about the importance of women in sports and the significant role the community plays in supporting student athletes.”
UMC’s First Lady Barbara Muesing has been instrumental in making the reception possible. “We welcome everyone to the event,” Muesing said, “but we want to especially encourage women and girls of all ages from the campus and community to attend.”
