(Mayville, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team went to Mayville, N.D. tonight with something to prove. The Golden Eagles did just that, silencing the Comets in a 21-0 shutout victory.

The game started slowly as both teams refused to give up the big play early. It wasn’t until 4:48 of the second quarter that UMC put together a five play, 55 yard drive to take the lead 7-0. The drive was capped off by an Eric John (So., RB, North Miami, FL) two-yard touchdown dash. The third quarter saw John finding the end zone again, this time on a 56 yard pass reception from quarterback David White (Jr., QB, Detroit, Mich.). In the fourth quarter, it was Aaron Wall (So., WR, New Orleans, LA) who caught a David White pass for a 16 yard touchdown reception. That would end the scoring for both teams and cap off the 21-0 victory for the Golden Eagles.

Offensively, the Golden Eagles out-gained the Comets by 230 yards (375/145). On the ground, Eric John had 168 yards rushing with a long of 19 and one touchdown. He averaged eight yards per carry on the evening. John led the Golden Eagles through the air as well, grabbing three passes for 75 yards with a long of 56 yards and one touchdown. David White went 8-18 in the game, throwing for 136 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Defensively, the Golden Eagles held the Comets to eight first downs for the game. Leading the rush for UMC was Matt Forse (Sr., LB, Sturgeon Lake, Minn.) who finished the game with four solo tackles and 5 assisted tackles. Forse also had an outstanding interception half-way through the first quarter which led to a Golden Eagle field goal attempt that fell just short. Robel Woldu (Jr., DB, Seattle, Wash.) broke up five Comet passes and assisted on a sack for a loss of eight yards. As a team, UMC grabbed three interceptions and broke up 11 total passes.

The Golden Eagles are 1-0 on the season. The team has next weekend off and will return to Ed Widseth Field for the home opener on September 15. SW Minnesota State University comes to town to battle the Golden Eagles. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
