Stellar St. Cloud Defense Propels Huskies Past Golden Eagles in Four

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Volleyball team squared off in a non-conference showdown against the St. Cloud State University Huskies at Lysaker Gymnasium this evening. The Golden Eagles played tough in the first two games, winning the first game 32-30, but slipped at the end of the second game losing 29-31. St. Cloud took over in the third match downing the Golden Eagles 15-30, and in the fourth game, the Golden Eagles attacked hard with 62 attempts but the Husky defense was too strong to overcome.
Theresa Crance (Sr., MH, Timber Lake, S.D.) led the Golden Eagles with 17 kills (.343 attack percentage), one solo block and three block assists. Amber Meyer (Fr., OH, Paxton, Neb.) played a complete game with 12 kills, two assists, one dig, one block solo and six block assists. Allison Zajicek (Jr., Beatrice, Neb.) played tall tonight with one block solo, eight block assists and 11 kills. As a team, the Golden Eagles out blocked the Huskies 15.5 to 15 and fired at will with 181 attacks compared to the 172 attacks of the Huskies. Cassie Yates (Jr., S, Buffalo, Minn.) assisted on 43 of the teams 55 kills and Heather Foreman (Jr., Lib., Brandon, Manitoba) led all defenders with 29 digs.
St. Cloud’s Andreana Pieper had five service aces and 21 digs, falling one short of 1,000 digs in her career. Ashley Shields led the Huskies offensively with a match high 20 kills (.395 attack percentage). Kelly Lynn Isaacson had 11 kills and played strong at the net knocking down one solo block and 10 assisted blocks.
Tonight’s loss puts the Golden Eagles at 4-12 overall on the season, while the Huskies improve to 7-10. The Golden Eagles head east on Highway 2 this Friday, September 28 to battle NSIC rival Bemidji State University in conference action. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Gillette Fieldhouse on the BSU campus.
