(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Soccer team put together a valiant comeback against Southwest Minnesota State University today. However, the Mustangs got the final word as Jessica Curl (So., Mid., Bismarck, N.D.) scored an unassisted goal with four seconds left in the second overtime as Southwest Minnesota State University came a way with a heartbreaking 4-3 victory in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opener for both teams in Marshall, Minn.

The Golden Eagles trailed 3-0 with 14:12 remaining in regulation before Samantha Welch (Fr., Def., Arlington, Wash.) started a tremendous rally by scoring her third goal of the season off a header from a corner kick by Kiely Bladow (Sr., Def./Mid., Monument, Colo.).  At 82:25, Amber Erdman (Jr., Mid./Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) put U of M, Crookston back on the board when she scored her third goal of the year off an assist from Richelle Copiak (Jr., Fwd./Mid., Calgary, Alberta, Canada). Kelsey Palmer (Fr., Fwd.,/Mid., Crookston, Minn.) continued the scoring frenzy at 89:31 as she scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Megan Gibeault (Fr., Fwd./Mid., Green Bay, Wis.) and sent the game to overtime.

The first overtime was scoreless for both teams. The second overtime appeared headed for the same result until Curl ended things in favor of the Mustangs. The Golden Eagles out shot SMSU 22-20 for the game after being out shot 13-2 in the first half.

Southwest Minnesota State improves their record to 2-7-1 and 1-0-0 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston drops their record to 2-9-0 and 0-1-0 in the NSIC.
