Golden Eagle Women’s Soccer Team Reverses Overtime Fortunes and Takes Double Overtime Victory 4-3

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Soccer team faced its second double overtime challenge in as many days. However, the Golden Eagles were not about to accept the same fate as Saturday and defeated Wayne State College today by a score of 4-3 in Wayne, Neb. It is U of M, Crookston’s first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victory of the season.

 

Wayne State College opened the scoring at 24:03 when Gena Romano (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) scored off an assist from Cassidy Goc (Jr., Columbus, Neb.). The Golden Eagles tied the game at 30:45 when Kelsey Palmer (Fr., Fwd./Mid., Crookston, Minn.) scored off an assist from Amber Erdman (Jr., Mid./Fwd., Crookston, Minn.). The Wildcats took the lead again at 56:16 when Sara Schwieger (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) scored an unassisted goal. U of M, Crookston countered when Megan Gibeault (Fr., Fwd./Mid., Green Bay, Wis.) scored off an assist from Richelle Copiak (Jr., Fwd./Mid., Calgary, Alberta, Canada) at 59:33. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game at 60:56 when Vanessa Copiak  (Jr., Fwd., Calgary, Alberta, Canada) used a header off a corner kick from Kiely Bladow (Sr., Def./Mid., Monument, Colo.) to score her first goal of the game. It was Bladow’s eighth assist of the season and the 12th of her career. She is the all – time assist leader in U of M, Crookston Soccer history.  At 63:04, Romano scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Ashley Janca (Fr., Bellevue, Neb.) to tie the game. Both teams failed to score the rest of the game sending the game to overtime.

 

The first overtime was scoreless. However, 4:35 into the second overtime Vanessa Copiak took a 25 yard shot off a deflection and scored her second goal of the game to give the Golden Eagles their third win of the season.

 

U of M, Crookston improves it record to 3-9-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in the NSIC. Wayne State College falls to 0-8-2 on the season and 0-2-0 in the NSIC.

 

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 when they play host to Minnesota State University – Moorhead and Concordia-St. Paul respectively. Both games are NSIC contests and start at 1:00 pm.
