Alumni Association and Athletic Department is pleased to announce their Outstanding Alumni and Athletic Hall of Fame awards for the year 2007. These awards recognize alumni who have displayed exemplary commitment and service to their occupational field, community, education and family. This year's outstanding alumni are Doug Aretz ’75 and Richard Magnusson ’81. Athletic Hall of Fame recipients are Janice (Gubbels) Milliard ’84, Steele Senske ’90 and Chancellor Emeritus Donald Sargeant.
Doug Aretz, ’75, graduated with an associate’s degree in natural resources conservation, parks & recreation management. Following his time at UMC, he earned a bachelor’s degree form Minnesota State University Moorhead and went on to study healthcare and managing services to benefit people at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He is a volunteer mentor/project leader for Community Health & Social Service Division of Russian Farms Community Project and serves as a district representative for Minnesota Health & Housing Alliance and is a regional director for Care Providers of Minnesota. Aertz is currently the administrator of St. Benedicts’ Senior Community in St. Cloud, Minn., where he is responsible for all levels of patient care and daily operations of the 222 bed skilled-nursing facility.
The Aretz and his wife, Barb, have four children, Forrest, Brook, Ashley and Tori, and reside in Cold Spring, Minn. In addition to a professional healthcare career, he and his wife, recently established their own business called Evolving Aretz, L.L.C. Its entrepreneurial in nature, promoting new inventions centered on healthcare, ergonomics and safety.
Richard Magnusson, ’81, graduated with an associate’s degree in diversified agriculture. After graduating from the U of M, Crookston Richard went on to receive a bachelor of science degree from North Dakota State University. Since then he has been managing partner of Magnusson Farms outside of Roseau, Minn., where he lives with his wife, Kathy, and their four children. Magnusson has chaired numerous positions in the Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers, along with many other agriculture associations. Magnusson's community service includes being a member of the Roseau Jaycees, where she served as Treasurer and President, the Roseau Lions, Moe Lutheran Church and Jadis Township Board.
Along with Magnusson’s professional and community activities, he has been honored as the Roseau County Emerging Leaser, as well as the Premier Seedsman Award.

Janice (Gubbels) Millard, ’84, was a two sport athlete at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. As a member of the women’s basketball team, she was a two-year All-Conference performer and was on the All-State and All-Region XIII team as a sophomore. Milliard was named UMC’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1984.
Steele Senske, ex. ’90 was a member of the men’s basketball team the the University of Minnesota, Crookston from 1988-1990. During the 1989-90 seasons he was names All-conference, All-State and All-Region XIII. He is the all time junior college leader at UMC in assists, second in career points and fourth in career rebounds.
Chancellor Emeritus Donald Sargeant came the the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1970 serving as chair of the agriculture division, as academic dean from 1973 to 1985 and served as Chancellor form 1985 to 2003. Sargeant was instrumental in the transition from a two-year to a four-year institution, as well as enhancing the athletic program from a junior college to a four-year NAIA athletic program and ultimately to NCAA Division II. Sargeant was a strong advocate of the athletic program and felt it helped give the students a unique balance between academics and athletics.
