Golden Eagles Unable to Pull Off Upset Against Warriors

(Crookston, Minn.)- Former Golden Eagle Head Volleyball Coach Dave Simon made his first return to the University of Minnesota, Crookston as assistant coach of Winona State University. He made it a victorious return as the Warriors defeated the Golden Eagles 3-0 (30-18, 31-29, 30-25). The second game was a well fought one with the Golden Eagles falling 29-31. The Golden Eagles continued their tough fight in the third game. The score was tied 14 times and the lead changed 10 times but the Warriors pulled the game out winning 30-25.
After the first two games, Heather Foreman (Jr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) led the Golden Eagles with seven kills, two digs, and one assisted block. Katie Bonine (Fr., OH, Cottage Grove, Minn.) had five kills, two service aces and four digs. Both teams hit the ball well, finding the holes in the defense and not allowing the hitters to block. The Golden Eagles out blocked the Warriors four to two in the first two matches.
For the night, Katie Bonine finished with 10 kills, three service aces and seven digs. Heather Foreman had nine kills, eight digs and three blocks assisted. Jaclyn Slepicka (So., Lib, Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 13 digs and one service ace. The Golden Eagles continued to out block the Warriors with seven blocks to Winona’s three blocks. Winona State’s Carmen Stankowski and Rudi Balich each had 12 kills on the night. Balich also had 13 digs to lead the Warriors. Lisa Dobie had 44 assists on the night and Mollie Bjelland had four service aces.
Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles record to 4-20 overall and 2-12 in NSIC play. The Warriors improve to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in NSIC conference match up’s. Tomorrow night, the Golden Eagles square off against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University in an NSIC conference showdown. The Golden Eagles won their last meeting in four games back in September. The match begins at 5:00 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
