Explosive First Half Lifts Wolves Over Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Northern State University football team was hitting on all cylinders at Ed Widseth Field today as the team racked up 640 total yards of offense in the 52-9 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

 

Northern State University took a 35-2 lead into half-time. Wolves quarterback Eric Ellingson completed 23 of 30 passes and connected for three touchdowns in the half. Through the air he had 353 passing yards and rushed for one more score. Ellingson’s favorite target in the half was Brian Jark who caught two touchdown passes and had 158 receiving yards. Jark also threw a touchdown pass on a half-back pass to Mike Cahoy with 31 seconds left in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles lone score was on a Northern State holding call in their end zone which resulted in a safety.

 

The University of Minnesota, Crookston came out firing in the third quarter as the team drove 87 yards on nine plays. David White (Fr., QB, Detroit, Mich.) capped off the drive with a one yard touchdown rush. The scoring would stop their for the Golden Eagles as Northern State responded with a touchdown in the third quarter and a touchdown and a field goal in the fourth quarter.

 

Northern State quarterback Eric Ellingson had a career day for the Wolves. In the game, Ellingson completed 26 of 34 passes. He threw for 393 yard and four touchdowns. Eleven different receivers caught passes from Ellingson including Brian Jark who caught nine passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. The Golden Eagles were led by quarterback David White who completed eight passes for 103 yards. White also rushed 10 times for 27 yards and one touchdown. Tight end Jordan Grafsgaard (Sr., Ulen, Minn.) hauled in three passes for 45 yards.

 

Defensively, Tayler Michels (Jr., SS, Pelican Rapids, Minn.) had an outstanding day for the Golden Eagles. Michels led all defenders with 14 total tackles (seven solo, seven assisted) and one pass break-up.

 

Golden Eagle punter Travis Coulson (Jr., Crescent City, Calif.) continues to have an All-Conference season. Coulson punted seven times for 307 yards for an average of 43.9 yards per punt. He had a long of 53 yards and stuck Northern State inside their 20-yard line three times.

 

The Golden Eagles are now 1-6 on the season and 0-6 in the NSIC. Northern State University moves to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Golden Eagles close out their home schedule next weekend when the team hosts Winona State University at Ed Widseth Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
