(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team had the opportunity to play spoiler today as they hosted the 6-0 (NSIC) Winona State Warriors. A Golden Eagle victory would more than likely have knocked the Warriors out of playoff contention. It was Winona State University however who played the role of spoiler, shutting out the Golden Eagles 37-0 in UMC’s final home game of the season.
The first half was relatively quiet as only 10 points were put on the board. Winona State scored at the 5:23 mark when running back Alex Wiese capped off a 10 play, 60 yard drive with a two-yard rush to put the Warriors up 7-0. The second score didn’t come until the 11:41 mark of the second quarter when Winona State put together a 12 play, 81 yard drive that finished with a 29-yard field goal from place kicker Ryan Abbott to give Winona a 10-0 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles recovered two Winona fumbles in the half but could not turn them into points. WSU’s Alex Wiese had a stellar half running the ball. He went into the break with 16 rushes for 99 yards with a touchdown and a 6.2 yards per carry average. Defensively, UMC’s Demario Robinson (Sr., LB, Hope, Arkansas) led all players in the half with eight total tackles (three solo, five assisted). He added one tackle for a loss and forced one fumble.
The second half did not smile kindly on the Golden Eagles as the team fumbled three times, losing possession on all three. The Warriors offense also found momentum, putting 27 points on the board in the two quarters to take the 37-0 victory. Leading both teams in offense was WSU’s Alex Wiese, who rushed 24 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He added a long of 34 yards and a 7.5 yards per rush average. Reggie Frazier (Sr., RB, Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Golden Eagles out of the back-field. Frazier rushed eight times for 42 yards with a long of 14 yards. Minnesota, Crookston’s quarterback David White (Jr., Detroit, Mich.) completed nine passes for 117 yards with a long of 32 yards. His favorite target on the day was running back Eric John (So., North Miami, Fla.) who caught four passes for 38 yards. Winona’s Peter Scott led all wide-outs with five receptions for 44 yards. Demario Robinson continued is strong defensive play through the second half, finishing the game with 12 total tackles (five solo, seven assisted), one tackle for a loss and one forced fumble.
The Golden Eagles are now 1-7 on the season and 0-7 in the NSIC. Winona State University stays perfect, upping their mark to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the NSIC. UMC travels to MSU Moorhead next Saturday to take on the Dragons. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
