(Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston head women’s softball coach Mitch Bakken announced today the signing of Kelly Toporek from Gilman Wis. to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles in 2008-09.

Toporek is a 5’10, infielder. In her junior season she hit for a .551 batting average and drove in 37 runs on 43 hits. She is a three-time first team All-Conference player, two-time team MVP, and a third team All-State performer. During the summer months, she plays for the Seymour Flames club team.

“Kelly is a tall, very athletic player. She has good body control and uses her quickness and range to make some very difficult plays. Defensively, she has expressed interest in both infield and outfield positions so I plan to utilize her athletic ability as much as possible.” says coach Bakken. “Offensively, she is a very confident hitter and that confidence leads to success at the plate. We will look to her bat to help us put runs on the board next season.”

Toporek plans to major in Early Childhood Education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Jane and Steve Toporek of Gilman, Wis.
