Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Big Victory Over Minnesota, Morris

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team opened up the 2007-08 season shooting 55.9 percent from the field to take a 90-76 victory over the Cougars this evening in Morris, Minn.

 

Gina Jaroszewski (Fr., F, Moorhead, Minn.) broke loose for the first double-double of the season scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds (one offensive, 15 defensive). She went 5 -7 from the field and 4-5 from beyond the arc. She also led all players with four steals. UMC’s Jamie Zelinsky (Fr., G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led all scorers with 21 points and led the Golden Eagles with six assists. Four of UMC’s five starters scored in double-figures tonight. Adding to the offensive output was Katie Cheline (So., F, Mondovi, Wis.) and Diana Taddy (Fr., G, Two Rivers, Wis.) who both added 16 points in the victory. Defensively, the Golden Eagles blocked eight Morris shots on the evening. The Cougars were led by Alaina Benson’s 20 points.

 

The Golden Eagles are 1-0 on the season while the Cougars drop to 0-1. UMC returns to the court tomorrow afternoon against Crown College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. in St. Boniface, Minn. The team returns home on November 20 to take on Valley City State University at 6:00 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
