(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team extended their win streak tonight to three games against the Valley City State University Vikings in Lysaker Gymnasium. Though the Golden Eagles had 13 turnovers to the Vikings eight, the women were still able to take the lead at the 7:10 mark of the first half and not look back, taking the victory 73-59.
At the half, Gina Jaroszewski (Fr., F, Moorhead, Minn.) was all over the court shooting three for five from the field with eight points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr., F, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) also had eight points at the half and added three assists. For the Vikings, Center Terra Billiet had six points and three rebounds.
In the second half, freshman guard Diana Taddy (Fr., G, Two Rivers, Wis.) exploded and scored 15 points, putting her at 19 for the night; a career high. Taddy also finished with seven rebounds, seven assists, four steals and was a perfect eight for eight at the free-throw line; all career highs. Katie Cheline (Soph., F, Mondovi, Wis.) had a double-double on the night scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Gina Jaroszewski also had a double-double finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds respectively and she added another steal in the second half to bring her total to three on the night. Valley City’s Terra Billiet finished with13 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 44.1% from the field and played great defensively stealing 12 balls and blocking six shots. The women also took advantage of the Vikings turnovers scoring 21 points on VCSU miscues.
Tonight’s win puts the Golden Eagles at 3-0 on the season, while the Vikings record drops to 3-4. The women travel to Dickinson State this Friday and Saturday to play in the DSU Holiday Tournament in Dickinson N.D.
