Golden Eagle Turnovers Hand Mavericks Non-Conference Victory

(Mankato, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team traveled to future NSIC opponent Minnesota State- Mankato for a non-conference game this evening. The Mavericks brought their high powered offense and went on to score 90 or more points for the fourth time this season taking the 98-67 win.
The Golden Eagles struggled in the first half, shooting just 8-27 from the field and turning the ball over 21 times. The Maverick’s shot 18-38 in the half and turned UMC turnovers into 18 first half points. Gina Jaroszewski (Fr, F, Moorhead, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively with 10 points. MSU’s Heather Johnson led all scorers with 13 points in the half, followed by teammate Alex Andrews who scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
The Golden Eagles rebounded in the second half and finished the game out-rebounding the Maverick’s 39-35. UMC minimized their turnovers and shot 16-35 from the field and played MSU to a 44-50 second half. UMC’s Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) found her touch, scoring 16 points in the half while shooting 6-7 from the field and a perfect 2-2 from long-range and the free-throw line. She finished the night with a team high 18 points. Jaroszewski finished with 13 points and Diana Taddy (Fr, G, Two Rivers, Wis.) rounded out UMC’s top scorers with 10 points and six assists. MSU’s Heather Johnson finished the game as the high scorer, putting 20 points on the board while making six steals. Nicole Christianson played big down low, scoring 17 of the teams 40 points in the paint and blocking three shots for the Mavericks.
Tonight’s loss drops the Golden Eagles to 4-2 on the season. The Maverick’s improve their record to a perfect 5-0. UMC returns to Lysaker Gymnasium on November 30 and December 1 to open NSIC conference play. The team hosts Wayne State College on Friday evening and SW Minnesota State on Saturday evening. Both games are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
