Golden Eagle Men's and Women's Basketball Opens NSIC Play at Home this Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are back from last weekend’s road trips and ready to play in front of a hometown crowd. Both teams open up NSIC play on Friday, November 30 against Wayne State College and Saturday, December 1 against SW Minnesota State University. Games begin at 6:00 pm for the women and 8:00 pm for the men on both nights.
The Golden Eagle Women’s team enters the weekend with a 4-2 overall record. The team split with Dickinson State University (58-62) and Montana State University- Northern (78-73) on November 23-24 at the Milanovich Classic in Dickinson N.D. On November 27, the women traveled to future NSIC opponent Minnesota State- Mankato for a non-conference game. The Mavericks brought their high powered offense and went on to score 90 or more points for the fourth time this season taking the 98-67 win. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles offensively on the season is Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with 16.5 points per game. Zelinsky has been dishing out the points as well. She is second on the team with 24 assists. Defensively, she is second on the team with 15 steals. Wayne State College enters the game with a 4-1 record. The Wildcats are by Laquisha Cook’s 13.8 points per game average.
The men enter the weekend with an overall record of 1-3. U of M, Crookston split at the University of North Dakota (UND) Thanksgiving Classic on November 23 and 24 against UND (61-76) and Montevallo (64-59 OT). Against Montevallo, the Golden Eagles battled through an overtime session and played stronger for the full 45 minutes to take the season’s first victory. Leading the way for UMC is Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.) who’s averaging 13.5 points per game on the season. The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 4-1 record. WSC is led by the high scoring Jamar Diggs who’s averaging 21.6 points per game and leads the team with 22 assists and 11 steals.
Following this weekend’s contests both teams hit the road. On Friday, December 7 the Golden Eagles take on the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul in an NSIC game. Game times are set for 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm in St. Paul, Minn. UMC returns home on Tuesday, December 11 to host the University of Minnesota, Duluth in a non-conference double-header. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm at Lysaker Gymnasium.
