(Crookston, Minn.)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) opened up NSIC conference play tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium against the Wayne State Wildcats in a game filled with many shots from long range.  The Golden Eagles started off slow scoring just 19 points in the first half, but came out strong in the second half scoring 50 points.  The effort was not enough however as the Golden Eagles dropped their conference home-opener to the Wildcats 89-69.

In the first half, the Wildcats dominated behind the three-point line. The team took 14 long range shots and made eight of them good for 57.1 percent. The Golden Eagles went two for nine from beyond the arc. Wildcat senior Andrea Schoepf was five for five behind the three-point line and had a total of 17 points in the first half.  Schoepf also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the first 20 minutes of play.  Poor shots and passing seemed to plague the Golden Eagles in the first half as they had 11 turnovers and shot 21.4 percent from the field. Wayne State shot 48.5 percent from the field and committed nine turnovers.  Jamie Zelinsky (Fr., F, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles in the first half scoring seven points, dishing two assists, blocking a shot and stealing two Wildcat passes.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles stepped up their shooting, converting 17 of 36 field goals and scoring 50 points in the final 20 minutes.  Jamie Zelinsky continued her stellar play finishing with 18 points, six assists, two assists and a block.  Katie Cheline (Soph., F, Mondovi, Wis.) had a solid second half as well scoring nine in the half and finishing with 10 points overall to go with five rebounds. Megan Hulst (Jr., F, Crookston, Minn.) scored a season high seven points and grabbed two rebounds in seven minutes of play. On the night, the Wildcats had three players with double digits in points. Andrea Schoepf led the way with 17 points. Laquisha Cook scored 15 points and Kylee McGill finished with 14 points in the game.  As a team, Wayne State shot an impressive 55 percent from behind the three-point line.

Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in NSIC play. The Wildcats of Wayne State improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.  The Golden Eagles will tip off again tomorrow at Lysaker Gymnasium to take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
