(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) and Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) had a dual this evening in Lysaker Gymnasium. The two teams exchanged the lead 15 times in the contest with SMSU prevailing at the final buzzer 75-66

The Golden Eagles shot very well from behind the three-point line in the first half. The team made five of nine shots from a distance good for a 55.6 shooting percentage.  Contributing to some of those three-point shots was Gina Jaroszewski (Fr., F, Moorhead, Minn.) who made three of her four three-point shots giving her with nine points and an assist in the first half.  Diana Taddy (Fr., G, Two River, Wis.) and Ana Garcia (Fr., G, Minnetonka, Minn.) both had four points and three assists in the first session.  Ball distribution seemed to be the key in the first half as the Golden Eagles had 11 assists to the Mustangs eight.  At the break, the Mustangs held on to a slight advantage 39-33.

Ball distribution continued in the second half as the Golden Eagles finished with 19 assists on the night.  Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles did not take advantage of their free-throw opportunities shooting only 52.9 percent helping Southwest Minnesota hold the lead for the rest of the game for a final of 75-66.  Katie Cheline (So., F, Mondovi, Wis.) led the Golden Eagles tonight with 13 points, six rebounds and a block, solidifying her presence in the post.  Off the bench, Kelsey Van Ackeren (So., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) who scored nine points, hustled for six rebounds and dished two assists. Jaroszewski wrapped up a solid night with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists. Leading all scorers on the evening was SMSU’s Sara Leidall who tallied 19 points in the contest. She was followed closely by Liz Grider who shot 70 percent from the field for 18 points.

Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to an even keel 4-4 on the season, and 0-2 on the opening weekend of Northern Sun conference play. The Mustangs improve to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.  The Golden Eagles travel to Concordia- St. Paul and MSU-Moorhead next Friday and Saturday. Both games are set to start at 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men on both nights.
