(Crookston, Minn.)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) men’s basketball team tipped-off game two of NSIC play in Lysaker Gymnasium tonight against the Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) Mustangs.  The Mustangs ability to convert three-point shots (72.7 percent) was key for Southwest as they defeated the Golden Eagles 76-58.

The Golden Eagles looked for answers to the Mustang offense as SMSU took a 41-31 lead into the break.  Southwest took advantage of miscues by the Golden Eagles scoring 11 points off of turnovers.  While the Golden Eagles were looking for answers, Joey Kollar (Sr., F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) stepped up to score six points,  grab five rebounds and dish two assists from the post.  Southwest’s Travis Krenske was the constant for the Mustangs as he scored12 points and handed out four assists. Kevin Andrews came off the bench for the Mustangs and scored eight points in the half.   

In the second half, the Golden Eagles took advantage of the Mustangs turnovers as UMC scored 12 points in the second half and finished with 18 points off of turnovers overall.  Free-throws were finally a bright spot for the Golden Eagles as the team shot 83.3 percent to the Mustangs 75 percent on the night.  The Mustang and Golden Eagle benches came alive as they combined for a total of 53 points of the 134 total points scored.  Joey Kollar continued his impressive night, finishing with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Bryce Cummings (Soph., G, Mukwonago, Wis.) made some clutch shots tonight as he led the Golden Eagles with 11 points. From the bench, Justin Peddycoart (Jr., C, Springfield, Ill.) scored seven points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked one shot even though he was in foul trouble for most of the second half.  The Mustang’s Travis Krenske continued a stellar night as he finished with 15 points, five assists and a steal. SMSU’s Kevin Andrews added 14 points on the night from the bench.

Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 1-5 overall and 0-2 on the opening weekend of NSIC play. The Mustangs improve their mark to 4-2 overall and 2-0 on the young NSIC season. The Golden Eagles travel to Concordia- St. Paul and MSU-Moorhead next Friday and Saturday. Both games are set to start at 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men on both nights.
