(Crookston, Minn.) – Finlandia University broke open a tie game with four third period goals and went on to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston by a score of 5-2 tonight in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action in Hancock, Mich. The loss halts U of M, Crookston’s three game win streak.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first when Matt Hann (Sr., Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) scored an unassisted even strength goal with just 51 seconds remaining in the first period to put U of M, Crookston up 1-0.
The Lions countered with 11:43 elapsed in period number two off a power play goal from Ryan Sullivan.
With the score tied 1-1 going into the third period, Finlandia scored three consecutive goals. Sullivan added his second power play goal of the evening with 3:54 gone in the third to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Tiger Marcotte added another power play goal 21 seconds later to put Finlandia up 3-1. Mike Parks added yet another power play goal at 8:35 elapsed to make the score 4-1.
Jared Kopp (Jr., Fwd., Bismarck, N.D.) put the Golden Eagles back on the board with a power play goal at 13:40 elapsed to bring U of M, Crookston within two goals. He was assisted by Ryan Tucker (Sr., Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) and Jacob Olsand (Jr., Def., Mayville, N.D.).
Finlandia closed out the scoring with 45 seconds remaining off an empty net goal from Josh Pacquette.
Finlandia University improves their overall record to 5-3-0 on the year and 5-2-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-7-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the MCHA.
The two teams resume action on Saturday. The puck drops at 3:30 pm (EST).
