Golden Eagles Shock Golden Bears in 78-67 Victory

(St. Paul, Minn.)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) men’s basketball team entered tonight’s game looking for their first NSIC victory. Balanced Golden Eagle scoring and solid defensive play helped bring the team’s goal to a reality as Minnesota, Crookston defeated Concordia- St. Paul 78-67 in St. Paul, Minn.

 

Concordia- St. Paul scored the first two points of the game but the Golden Eagles answered with a three pointer at the 18:22 mark and proceeded to keep the lead for the final 38:22 minutes of the game. UMC outscored the Bears 11-2 over the first four minutes of the first half. The Golden Eagles led by as many points as 14 in the first half and took a 40-27 lead at the half. Delano Robinson (So, G, Bloomington, Ill.) shot a sensational 4-6 from the field in the first half to lead the Golden Eagles with nine points. The Golden Bears were led by Craig Heiman and Chuol Chany who each scored 10 points in the first half.

 

The Golden Bears outscored UMC in the second half 40-38 but it was not enough as the Golden Eagles played tight defense to solidify the victory. In the game, the Golden Eagles shot 27-5 (51.9%) from the floor, including 7-13 (53.8%) from three-point range. Minnesota, Crookston out-rebounded the Bears 39-35 and committed 23 turnovers, compared to 19 for Concordia. UMC’s Bryce Cummings (So, Mukwonago, Wis.) led all scorers with nine points in the second half. He finished the game with 14 to lead the Golden Eagles. Delano Robinson and Joey Kollar (Sr, F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) both finished with 13 points. Aaron Smith (Sr, G, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out the top UMC scorers with 11 points in the game. Defensively, Justin Peddycoart (Jr, C, Springfield, Ill.) grabbed a game high 10 rebounds and scored eight points. CSP was led by Craig Heiman’s 19 points.

 

Tonight’s NSIC conference victory brings the Golden Eagles to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears fall to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC. UMC travels to Moorhead, Minn. tomorrow night to take on the Dragons of MSU Moorhead. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
