CROOKSTON, Minn. (December 11, 2007) – An endowment to honor the passion and legacy of Jim Karn has been established at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Office of Development & Alumni Relations created the endowment fund to honor Karn, a longtime Crookston resident and renowned baseball coach. The endowment will provide ongoing financial support for future generations of baseball players at the Crookston campus. “The Jim Karn Baseball Endowment Fund will honor a man who loved baseball,” said Bill Tyrrell, director of athletic fundraising. “This endowment will create a lasting tribute to Jim, his dedication and his passion for the game; it will also help students who want to play baseball at the U of M, Crookston to carry on that legacy.” Karn, a native of St. Cloud, Minn., moved to Crookston in 1966 where he was employed by the State of Minnesota. He coached at Mount Saint Benedict High School upon arriving in Crookston and also became active with the Crookston Reds amateur baseball team as a player and coach for the next 35 years. From 1990-94, Karn also coached baseball at the U of M, Crookston. After retirement, Karn returned to St. Cloud to coach with his brother at St. Cloud Cathedral. In 2001, he was named to the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. Karn passed away in 2005.
