Akeem Cubie

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team came into tonight’s non-conference game against Minnesota, Morris with a bad taste in their mouth. The Golden Eagles fell to University of Minnesota affiliate school Minnesota Duluth on December 11 by just three points 76-73. Tonight the outcome was far different as the team tied a season high in field goal percentage (.519) to down the Cougars 93-70.

 

The Golden Eagles started the first half a little cold and found themselves in a nine point deficit just 6:17 into the game. UMC solidified its defense and picked up the scoring and with 6:46 left in the half took the lead for the first time in the game. The lead changed three more times in the half before the Golden Eagles offensive took over taking a 45-32 lead into the half. In the first 20 minutes Minnesota, Crookston shot 54 percent from the field and went 4-4 from the free-throw line. The bench, as has been the case for much of the season, sparked the team with 26 points in the half to the Cougars two. Leading the way offensively for the Golden Eagles were Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Jordan Grafsgaard (Sr, F, Ulen, Minn.) who both scored 11 points in the half. Cubie went 5-6 from the field and Grafsgaard was a perfect 5-5. Grafsgaard grabbed four rebounds including three offensive boards that he put back for six Golden Eagle points. Defensively Matt Pelzer (Jr, G, St. Cloud, Minn.) led all players with eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Minnesota, Morris was led by Eric Dalbey’s 11 points.

 

Minnesota, Crookston used the long ball in the second half to blow the game open and set 2007-08 season records. The team went 7-17 from beyond the arc after going 1-8 in the first half. The eight three-pointers were a season high for the team. The bench for the Golden Eagles doubled its first half output and scored 52 points in the game. The team scored 26 second-chance points off a blistering 21 offensive rebounds. In the game, UMC out-rebounded Morris 56-29 to set a season record. Cubie added 14 points in the second half to finish with a team season high and career high 25 points on 12-17 shooting. He was followed by Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.) who scored 18 points on 7-14 shooting and 4-7 shooting from long range. Joey Kollar (Sr, F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) played solid again scoring 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds. The team used quick hands and distributed the ball well tallying 27 assists, breaking a 2007-08 season high of 15. Handing the ball over to his teammates the most tonight was Delano Robinson (So, G, Bloomington, Ill.) who finished with a career high eight assists. On the night the Golden Eagles set 2007-08 season highs in points (93), field-goals made (40), three-point shots made (8), assists (27) and total rebounds (56). Ironically, the Golden Eagles tied the all-time assists record and all-time rebounds record with both records being set against the University of Minnesota, Morris, with the record for assists being set on January 10, 2003 and rebounds being set on December 29, 2000. The Cougars were led by Phil Allen who finished with 23 points and five rebounds.

 

Tonight’s win boosts the Golden Eagles to 3-7 overall on the season. Minnesota, Morris drops to 4-5 overall. The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow evening against the Mayville State Comets at Lysaker Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
