(Crookston, Minn.)- Hot off of a win last night, the University of Minnesota, Crookston looked to keep the streak going against the Mayville State Comets in Lysaker Gymnasium to wrap up the first part of the season before semester break. The Golden Eagles made 12 shots from behind the three-point line tonight, but with Mayville’s Tremel Gilot scoring 30 points it was tough to keep up as the Golden Eagles lost 96-80
Eight was the magic number at the end of the first half. With eight lead changes and tied scores, Mayville State led the U of M, Crookston 49-43. UMC was a total of nine for 12 from behind the three-point line (75 percent) while the Comets of Mayville were only two for eight. Although the Golden Eagles trailed at the half, as a team they still shot 51 percent from the field. Joey Kollar (Sr., F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) and Akeem Cubie (Fr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) both scored nine points in the first half. Kollar contributed down low, while Cubie was a perfect three for three behind the three-point line. Bryce Cummings (Soph., G, Mukwanago, Wis.) scored eight points, six of which were deep behind the three-point line. For Mayville, Tremel Gilot led the Comets with 19 points. Mayville also scored 17 points off of Golden Eagle turnovers in the half.
After a first half that saw the Golden Eagles very successful from behind the three point line, UMC was not able to match that same success in the second half making only three of eight shots. However, the Golden Eagles did beat their season high of nine three point shots made, making 12 on the night; continuing the trend of three-point success. In 2003, the Golden Eagles made 12 shots from behind the three point line as well. In 2002, UMC sunk 11 and in 01’ the Golden Eagles made 10. Akeem Cubie continued his success scoring 17 points, rebounding five balls and dishing three assists. Cubie this week has scored 56 points for an average of 18.67 points a game. Justin Peddycoart (Jr., C, Springfield, Ill.) stepped up in the second half finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Joe Paschka (Fr., C, Rosemount, Minn.) and Joey Kollar both finished with 10 points from the post tonight. Paschka also added two blocks. Mayville State had some big numbers tonight as Tremel Gilot scored 30 points, while Marques Benjamin scored 12 points and dished 11 assists. As a team, the Comets finished with five players with double-digits in points.
Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 3-8 overall, while Mayville State increase to 7-6 overall. The Golden Eagles will be enjoying their holiday break and will be back in action December 29 in St Cloud to take on the St. Cloud State Huskies. The game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
