(Crookston, Minn.) – Hamline University opened up a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back in a 6-2 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey team Saturday night at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn.

The Pipers found the back of the U of M, Crookston net just 58 seconds into the game when Steve Festler scored an even strength goal to put Hamline up 1-0. The Golden Eagles proceeded to kill a major penalty and a minor penalty that had them at a two-man disadvantage. However, Hamline’s Dustin Fulton scored another even strength goal just over a minute later at 15:23 to give the Pipers a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.

U of M, Crookston closed the gap to 2-1 with 12:59 gone by in the second period when Matt Hann (Sr., Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) scored a power play goal off assists from Matt Waclawik (So., Fwd., Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Jared Kopp (Jr., Fwd., Bismarck, N.D.). However, the Pipers regained their two goal advantage when Festler scored an even strength goal with 18:39 elapsed in the period to put Hamline up 3-1.

The third period proved to be U of M, Crookston’s undoing as Hamline added even strength goals from Fulton (10:10) and Festler (10:22) to take a 5-1 lead. Hann put the Golden Eagles back on the board in unassisted fashion with his second power play goal of the evening at 18:19 of the third period. Hamline closed out the scoring at 19:37 when Joe Long scored an unassisted, empty-net goal to secure the 6-2 victory.

Hamline University improves their record to 4-3-2 overall. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-9-0 on the season. U of M, Crookston will return to action on December 28-29 when they host Franklin Pierce University of New Hampshire at the Crookston Civic Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 pm each night.
