High Pressure Husky Defense Forces Golden Eagles into 27 Turnovers in 91-64 SCSU Victory

(St. Cloud, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston traveled to St. Cloud, Minn. tonight to take on the Huskies of St. Cloud State University in Halenbeck Hall on the SCSU campus. The Huskies played an in-your-face style of defense forcing the young Golden Eagle team into 27 turnovers for 31 points off turnovers to take the 91-64 non-conference win.

 

The Golden Eagles shot 48 percent in the first half and played the Huskies to a close 36-45 half-time score. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led all scorers in the first 20-minutes of play shooting 7-11 from the field, scoring 17 points. Talisha Barlow scored 12 points to lead the Huskies in the first-half.

 

The aggressive play of the Huskies wore down UMC in the second half. The Golden Eagles turned the ball over 16 times in the second session and shot 28.6 percent from the field to be outscored 46-28. Zelinsky went 0-6 from the field and made one free-throw for 18 points on the night to lead all scorers. Defensively, Katie Cheline (So, F, Mondovi, Wis.) grabbed 10 rebounds (three offensive, seven defensive) and scored six points for the Golden Eagles. The Huskies finished with six players scoring in double-digits. Barlow added four points in the second half to lead her squad with 16 points.

 

Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 4-8 overall, while the Huskies improve to 5-5 overall.  The Golden Eagles are off until January 2 when the University of North Dakota comes to town for a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
