(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Basketball team hosted the Dakota State University (DSU) Trojans tonight in the first game at Lysaker Gymnasium since December 15. The Golden Eagles opened up the game strong taking a 45-32 halftime lead. However, the Trojans would not go down without a fight outscoring the Golden Eagles 45-39 in the second before U of M, Crookston finished off DSU for an 84-77 non-conference victory.
Offensive rebounds were the key to the Golden Eagle’s success in the first half. UMC grabbed nine offensive boards while holding DSU to zero. Those timely rebounds contributed to 18 of UMC’s first-half points and the Trojans were out-rebounded 24 to eight in the first 20 minutes of play. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Delano Robinson (So, G, Bloomington, Ill.) who tallied 13 first half points. Justin Peddycoart (Jr, C, Springfield, Ill.) added 10 points and grabbed five rebounds including four offensive boards.
The rebounds didn’t come as easily in the second half as Dakota State began to crash the boards and pressure the Golden Eagles. DSU out-rebounded UMC 18 to 14 in the second half and made eight of their own second chance points while holding the Golden Eagles to zero. The late comeback by Dakota State was halted as UMC regained their composer to close the door. Robinson added seven points in the second half to finish with a career high 20. He shot 5-10 from the field, 2-2 from long range and an outstanding 8-8 from the charity stripe. Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.) picked his game up in the second half scoring 13 points for a game total of 19. Peddycoart was solid on both ends of the court, tying a career high with12 points and grabbing seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive). The Trojans were led by Joe Backus’ 19 points. He was followed by Sean Baitinger’s 18 points.
U of M, Crookston improves their record to 4-9 on the season while Dakota State University falls to 2-11. The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, January 5 when they travel to Bemidji State University for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) game. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
