Well Rounded Offense Propels Beavers Past Golden Eagles 87-73

(Bemidji, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team traveled to Bemidji Minn. tonight to take on the fifth ranked (NSIC) Beavers in the BSU Gymnasium. It was a fast paced track meet with Bemidji State holding on to the victory 87-73.

 

The first 11 minutes of the game were a back and forth offensive contest. BSU opened the game on a 7-2 run but the Golden Eagles responded with a 15-6 run to take the lead five minutes in on a Jenna Dolence (Fr, G, Moorhead, Minn.) three-point shot. Through the half, the score was tied three times with the lead changing five times as both teams combined for 94 points. The Beavers took a slight advantage into the intermission leading the Golden Eagles 51-43. Offensively, the hot hand went to BSU’s Heidi Matzke who finished the half with 16 points. She shot 7-10 from the field and also grabbed six boards. Also scoring in double-digits for the Beavers were Amy Lawson (13) and Stephanie Peterson (10). Jessica Biddle (Jr, C, Elburn, Ill.) had her best half of the season for Minnesota, Crookston. She knocked down a career high 12 points on 6-7 shooting.

 

The field goal percentages for both teams cooled in the second half as UMC shot 28 percent and BSU shot 44 percent. Minnesota, Crookston played within six points of Bemidji but the first half deficit could not be overcome as BSU took the victory 87-73. The Golden Eagles had three players in double-figures on the night. Biddle finished with 14 points on 7-9 shooting while grabbing five rebounds. Katie Cheline (So, F, Mondovi, Wis.) sparked UMC offensively in the final 20 minutes, scoring 11 points in the half for a total of 13 on the night. Defensively, she grabbed seven rebounds. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) also scored 13 points on the night and dished out four assists for the Golden Eagles. Bemidji State shot 50 percent overall on the night and retaliated with four players scoring in double-digits. Matzke led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Peterson scored 18, Lawson scored 15 and tallied 11 assists for her first double-double and Karlee Simonson added 10 points for the Beavers in the victory.

 

Minnesota, Crookston is now 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the NSIC. Bemidji State moves to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in conference games. UMC returns to the court on Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12 to host the University of Mary and Northern State University in NSIC play. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on both nights.
