(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Mary came to the Lysaker Gymnasium to take on the University of Minnesota, Crookston in an NSIC conference showdown tonight.  The Golden Eagles took the lead at the half and continued their dominance through the first 10 minutes of the second half but faltered late.  Both teams were evenly matched as the score was tied 13 times. In the end, Mary was able to hang on after eight lead changes in the game with a final of 77-71.

At the end of the first half, the Golden Eagles were up 39-37 over the Marauders as both teams traded the lead three times and tied it up seven times.  The Golden Eagles controlled the paint scoring 26 points in the first half. Minnesota, Crookston also earned 12 points off of Marauder mistakes although both teams committed seven turnovers.  The Golden Eagles key to success in the first half was ball distribution as nine of the 11 players that appeared in the first half scored.  Leading the way off the bench was Akeem Cubie (Fr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored seven points in eight minutes.  Joey Kollar (Sr., F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) continued his consistent play as he scored six points and grabbed two rebounds. Through the first 10 minutes of play, Mary’s Eric Erdmann had nine points and finished the half with 14 points.  As a team, the Golden Eagles shot an impressive 68.2 percent (15-22) from the field while the Marauders only shot 46.2 percent (12-26).

The second half looked promising for the Golden Eagles as they took a 55-45 lead on a 12-2 run in the opening six minutes of the half.  The tables turned when the Marauder’s Geoff West started a comeback that eventually saw Mary take back the lead with 2:58 left in the game.  Turnovers were a factor for the last eight minutes of the game as the Golden Eagles turned the ball over four times allowing Mary to comeback and keep the lead.  Mary finished with 20 points off of 14 UMC turnovers tonight.  Justin Peddycoart (Jr., C, Springfield, Ill.) was a firecracker in the second half scoring eight in the half alone, including a dunk on an inbound pass.  Peddycoart finished the night with a season high 13 points. Kollar led the team with 14 points and played a stellar night defensively.  Delano Robinson (So., G, Bloomington, Ill.) played a great second half as well scoring 11 points and dishing six assists.  For the Marauders, Eric Erdmann led the team with 23 points, six rebounds and two assists.  West finished with 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half.

Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in NSIC conference play. The Marauders improve to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in NSIC play.  The Northern State Wolves come to Lysaker Gymnasium tomorrow night to take on the Golden Eagles in an NSIC conference showdown. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
