Golden Eagles Run with Wolves in 70-61 Loss

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles took on the #15 ranked Northern State University Wolves this evening in Northern Sun Conference action. The Golden Eagles committed 19 personal fouls tonight and the Wolves took advantage converting 16 of 21 free throws. UMC made it interesting shooting nine of 19 (47.4 percent) behind the three-point line but the deficit created by fouls was too much as the Golden Eagles fell 70-61.
The Golden Eagles were unable to withstand the Wolves defensive pressure as Northern State was ahead 40-24 at the end of the first half. Both teams turned the ball over frequently as the Wolves committed nine turnovers, while the Golden Eagles had 10 turnovers. Delano Robinson (Soph., G, Bloomington, Ill.) had a solid first half scoring five points. He also dished four assists and had two steals. Joey Kollar (Sr., F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) and Matt Pelzer (Jr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) had five points at the end of the first half. Northern State’s Kevin Ratzsch led the Wolves with 10 points at the end of the half. The Golden Eagles shot well from behind the three-point line in the first half making three of four shots attempted.
Statistically, both teams were evenly matched in tonight’s match-up. Both teams scored 24 points and 20 or more points off turnovers. The Minnesota, Crookston bench outplayed the Northern bench as they scored 27 points to Northern State’s 18. Having a big night off the bench was Eli McVey (Sr., G, Princeton, Minn.) who scored a season high 11 points for the Golden Eagles. He also grabbed three rebounds, dished two assists and had two steals. Justin Peddycoart (Jr., C, Springfield, Ill.) was in foul trouble early but still managed to score nine points, grab seven rebounds, block two shots and commit thievery with one steal. Kevin Ratzsch led the Wolves tonight with 23 points, while Levi Hamilton scored 13 points and rebounded six balls.
Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in NSIC play. #15 Northern State improves to 16-1 overall and 7-1 in NSIC play. The men are back in action next Friday, January 18 when the Golden Eagles travel to Winona State to take on the #4 Warriors in a NSIC showdown. The tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. The team returns to the court on Saturday, January 19 to play Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. That game is also scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
