Golden Eagle Men’s and Women’s Basketball Travel to Winona State and Upper Iowa This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are on the road this weekend as they travel to Winona State University and Upper Iowa University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) double-header weekend. Game times on both nights are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men.

 

The Golden Eagle women are 4-12 overall and 0-7 in the NSIC. The team is extremely young with three of the top four scorers in their first year at Minnesota, Crookston. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively. She is averaging 16.4 points per game through 16 games this season. She is second on the team in steals with 26 and second in assists with 51. Katie Cheline (So, F, Mondovi, Wis.) and Gina Jaroszewski (Fr, F, Moorhead, Minn.) are averaging 9.4 points per game for the Golden Eagles. Jaroszewski leads the team in rebounds with 108 and blocked shots with 14.

 

The Winona State women are 12-5 overall and 3-4 in the NSIC. The Warriors are led Jenny Steffen’s 12.5 points per game. She is a 90 percent free-throw shooter and leads the team in steals with 32. Upper Iowa University is 4-15 overall and 0-7 in the NSIC. The Peacock’s are led by Andrea Downs who is averaging 12.7 points per game. She also leads the team in assists with 104 and steals with 24.

 

The Golden Eagle men are 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the NSIC. The team has been playing good ball but have not been rewarded in the win column. The last four losses have been by nine points or less with a one point, double-overtime loss to Bemidji State on January 5. Minnesota, Crookston is led by Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.) who is averaging 10.8 points per game through 16 games and is second on the team in assists with 37. Freshman Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) continues to play well as he learns the game at the NSIC level. He is averaging 9.5 points per game and is shooting a team high 56 percent from the field.

 

The Winona State Warriors are 18-1 overall and 7-0 in the NSIC and are ranked #1 in the country in Division II Men’s Basketball. The team is led by 2006-07 NSIC Player of the Year John Smith. He is averaging 18.4 points per game and leads the Warriors in rebounds (169), assists (58) and blocks (58). Upper Iowa University is 3-13 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC. The Peacocks are led by Matt Lesan who is averaging 11.3 points per game through 16 games. He is second on the team in assists with 25.

Both teams go on the road again the following weekend as Minnesota, Crookston visits the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Friday January 25. The teams travel to Wayne, Neb. on Saturday, January 26 to take on the Wildcats of Wayne State College. Game times are set for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men on both nights.
