High Pressure Warrior Defense Earns Winona 77-48 Victory Over Golden Eagles

(Winona, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston men’s basketball team entered its longest road weekend of the season visiting #3 ranked Winona State University in NSIC action tonight. Winona forced the Golden Eagles into 21 turnovers to give the Warriors the team’s 38th straight NSIC victory 77-48.
Winona State shocked the Golden Eagles to open the game as the Warriors went on an 18-0 run through the first five minutes of play. Minnesota, Crookston continued to battle and got within nine points before the Warriors surged again to take a 40-25 lead into the half. The difference in the half was turnovers as Minnesota, Crookston committed 11 in the half which led to 16 Warrior points. WSU’s Quincy Henderson and John Smith led all-scorers in the first half with eight points. UMC’s Eli McVey (Sr, G, Princeton, Minn.) and Adam Hendricks (Fr, F, Watertown, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with five points each in the half. Joey Kollar (Sr, F, Norwood-Young America, Minn.) owned the glass in the first 20 minutes, grabbing seven rebounds (2 offensive, 5 defensive).
The Warriors continued to pressure the Golden Eagles in the second half, forcing Minnesota, Crookston into 10 more turnovers for a game total of 21. Winona State capitalized on those turnovers scoring 25 points on Golden Eagle miscues. The Warriors began to spread the court and finished with four players in double-digit points. Leading all scorers was WSU’s Josh Korth who finished with 14 points. He was followed by Quincy Henderson’s 12, Curtrel Robinson’s 11 and Travis Whipple’s 10. John Smith grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots for the Warriors. The Golden Eagles were led by McVey and Eric Rongen (Sr, G, Devils Lake, N.D.) who scored nine points each. Kollar finished with 11 rebounds (3 offensive, 8 defensive) for UMC.
Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 4-13 overall and 1-7 in NSIC play. Winona State advances to 19-1 overall and 8-0 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Upper Iowa to play the Peacocks. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
