Golden Eagle Men’s and Women’s Basketball Travel to SW Minnesota State and Wayne State (NE) This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) men’s and women’s basketball teams are on the road again this weekend as they travel to SW Minnesota State and Wayne State (NE) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. Game times on both nights are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men.

 

The Golden Eagle women are 5-13 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC. The team is coming off its biggest win of the season, defeating Upper Iowa University on January 19, 80-70 in Fayette, Iowa. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively. She is averaging 16.9 points per game through 18 games this season. She is second on the team in steals with 28 and second in assists with 58. Katie Cheline (So, F, Mondovi, Wis.) is averaging 9.8 points per game for UMC. She leads the team with 121 rebounds, good for a 6.7 rebounds per game average.

 

The Mustangs of SW Minnesota State are 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the NSIC. The team is led by Sara Leidall who is averaging 11.9 points per game. The Mustangs defeated Minnesota, Crookston 75-66 on December 1, in Crookston. Laquisha Cook leads the Wayne State Wildcats with 15.2 points per game. She is second on the team in steals with 23. On November 30, the Wildcats defeated the Golden Eagles 89-69 at Lysaker Gymnasium.

 

The Golden Eagle men are 4-14 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston is led by 2006-07 NSIC Co-Newcomer of the Year, Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.). He is averaging 10.4 points per game through 18 games and is second on the team in assists with 39. Freshman Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) continues to play well as he learns the game at the NSIC level. Cubie is averaging 8.8 points per game and is shooting a team high 54 percent from the field. Justin Peddycoart (Jr, C, Springfield, Ill.) is the big man down low as he leads the team in rebounds with 92. He is also the team leader in blocked shots with 20.

 

SW Minnesota State is 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the NSIC. The Mustangs are led by Travis Krenske who is averaging 14.9 points per game. He also leads the team in assists with 45 and is second on the team in steals with 25. The Mustangs defeated the Golden Eagles 76-58 on December 1 in Crookston. Jamar Diggs is the offensive leader of the Wayne State Wildcats. He is averaging 15.3 points per game and leads the team in steals with 31 and assists with 80. Wayne State is 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the NSIC. Wayne State defeated Minnesota, Crookston 73-66 on November 30 in Crookston.

The teams return home on Friday, February 1 and Saturday February 2 to host MSU Moorhead and Concordia- St. Paul. Game times are set for 6 PM for the women and 8 PM for the men.
