Golden Eagle Women Move into Ninth Place with Win Over Southwest Minnesota State 75-71

(Marshall, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women’s basketball team took over the ninth place spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tonight by defeating SW Minnesota State 75-71 in Marshall, Minn. The Golden Eagle’s post-season hopes are in their own hands now as the Mustangs are the eighth place team in the NSIC with the top eight teams advancing to the post-season.

 

The first half was a back and forth battle as the teams swapped the lead 11 times in the first 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles shot 43 percent from the field but found themselves down three points 37-34 to go into the break. “Veteran” Katie Cheline (So, F, Mondovi, Wis.) had a big first half scoring a half high 12 points. She went 5-9 from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line. Freshman Ana Garcia (Fr, G, Minnetonka, Minn.) helped keep the game close with her defensive play. She had a first half high five defensive rebounds and added six points and two steals. Abby Oakland led the Mustangs with 10 points on 4-6 shooting.

 

The Golden Eagles took control and closed the door on the Mustangs in the second half as the team outscored SW Minnesota State 41-34. Minnesota, Crookston used untimely Mustang turnovers to score 23 points off of turnovers in the game. The Golden Eagles finished with four players in double-digits in points on the night. Leading the team was Cheline and Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who finished with 16 points a piece. Zelinsky added five assists and seven rebounds in the contest as well. Also coming up big for the Golden Eagles were Diana Taddy (Fr, G, Two Rivers, Wis.) and Jenna Dolence (Fr, G, Moorhead, Minn.) who scored 13 and 10 points respectively. The Mustang’s Heidi Kimmes led all scorers with 17 points on the night.

 

Tonight’s win moves the Golden Eagles to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in NSIC play. SW Minnesota State drops to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in NSIC play.  The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Wayne State (Neb.) to do battle with the Wildcats.
