(Wayne, Neb.) – The Golden Eagles Women’s basketball team finished their road trip this evening in Wayne, Neb. as they took on the Wayne State Wildcats. The Golden Eagles just could not seem to make shots in the Rice Auditorium tonight as they ended with a shooting percentage of 27 percent and lost this evening’s match-up 84-47.
The Wildcats opened the first three minutes of the game with a 12-2 run. After the Golden Eagles rebounded from a slow start, the Wildcats went on a 24-4 run in the last seven minutes of the half to put the score at 46-19. Jenna Dolence (Fr., G, Moorhead, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles as she scored five points and dished an assist. Wayne’s Andrea Schoepf scored 11 points at the half.
The Golden Eagles were down at the half, so some risks needed to be taken in the second half of play. Minnesota, Crookston attempted 11 shots from behind the three-point arc, converting only one shot. But UMC did improve their shooting percentage in the second half converting on 11-33 shots. The Wildcats retaliated with another big run in tonight’s game, going on a 15-2 series in seven minutes. Grabbing rebounds overall seemed to be a problem as the Golden Eagles grabbed 38 to the Wildcats 56. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr., G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had seven points in the second half, putting her game total to 10. Zelinsky also added a block and and assist in tonight’s contest. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Soph., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) was not far behind as she scored nine points on the night. Andrea Schoepf and Kati Jo Christensen both scored 17 points on the night for the Wildcats.
Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 6-14 overall and 2-9 in NSIC play, while the Wildcats improve to 15-5 overall and 8-3 in NSIC action. The Golden Eagles return to Lysaker Gymnasium on February 1 to host MSU Moorhead. Tip-off is set for 6 PM.
