Wildcats Use Free-Throws to Escape with 75-70 Victory over Golden Eagles

(Wayne, Neb.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston men’s basketball team entered tonight’s contest looking for an NSIC weekend split against the Wayne State Wildcats. The Golden Eagles played a solid 40 minutes of play, but the Wildcats kept just enough distance with free-throws to sneak away with the 75-70 NSIC victory.
The Golden Eagles and the Wildcats made the same number of baskets in the first half with the scoring differential coming down to free-throws. Minnesota, Crookston converted three free-throws while the Wildcats made eight to take a 38-34 lead. Eli McVey (Sr, G, Princeton, Minn.) led the Golden Eagle offense scoring 10 points. WSC’s Jamar Diggs and Bryce Caldwell also scored 10 points in the first half.
The two teams continued to play “mirror-image” basketball in the second half making 13 baskets in the second half for a game total of 26 each. Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.) came to life in the second half for the Golden Eagles, scoring 14 of his team high 21 points. McVey finished with 15 points while freshman Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) added 11 points in the contest. Bryce Caldwell and Jamar Diggs scored 22 and 20 points respectively in the Wildcat win.
Tonight’s loss moves the Golden Eagles to 4-16 overall and 1-10 in NSIC play, while the Wildcats advance to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles return to Lysaker Gymnasium on February 1 to host MSU Moorhead. Tip-off is set for 8 PM.
