MSU Moorhead Starts and Finishes Hot to Defeat Golden Eagle Women 74-50

(Crookston, Minn.) – Minnesota State University Moorhead was six for six from the field in the first 2:30 of the game, including three of three from three-point range and opened up a 43-23 halftime lead. The Dragons used the half time lead to earn a 74-50 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Women’s Basketball action tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.

 

Eight players scored in the first half for the Dragons including Allison Swenson who had 14 points. Krista Opheim added nine first half points while Katie Walden scored six points and pulled down seven boards. MSU Moorhead shot a blistering 58.3 percent in the first half and opened the game up with a 19-2 run.

 

The Golden Eagles went on a late run in the first half sparked by Brittany Milne (Sr, G, Glendive, Mont.). The senior came off the bench and scored six points as did Katie Cheline (So, F, Mondovi, Wis.). Diana Taddy (Fr, G, Two Rivers, Wis.) led all U of M, Crookston scorers in the first half with eight points.

 

While U of M, Crookston played a better second half, the Dragons just proved to be too much, outscoring the Golden Eagles by a 31-27 clip in the second half. Swenson led all scorers with 19 points while Walden added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Shelly Soule added 10 points for MSU Moorhead who has an overall record of 13-7 and NSIC record of 7-4.

 

The Golden Eagles saw 10 different players score. They were led by Taddy’s nine points followed by Milne’s eight points. Gina Jaroszewski (Fr, F, Moorhead, Minn.) added six points and eight rebounds for U of M, Crookston.

                                           

The Golden Eagles fall to 6-15 overall and 2-10 in the NSIC. The Dragon’s advance to 13-7 overall and 7-4 in the NSIC.  UMC returns to action tomorrow night when they host NSIC foe Concordia-St. Paul. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm at Lysaker Gymnasium.
