Dragons Overpower Golden Eagle Men Late for 75-58 NSIC Victory

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston and their injury depleted squad took on a strong Minnesota State Moorhead team at Lysaker Gymnasium tonight. The Golden Eagles put forth a valiant effort, however, the Dragons proved to be too much as they pulled away late in the second half for a 75-58 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action.

 

MSU Moorhead opened the game with an 11-2 run through six minutes of play. The Golden Eagles were able to keep the game close but trailed the Dragons by a 32-26 score at the half. The differential came down to three-point shooting and free-throws as both teams shot 41 percent from the field. The Dragons hit four three-pointers and shot 8-9 from the line to take the six point lead. UMC was led by Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.) and Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) who each scored five points in the half. The Dragons were led by Grant Fossum’s eight points.

 

The Golden Eagles came out in the second half and shot 50 percent from the field. The Dragon’s bested that mark shooting at 55 percent clip. Turnovers proved costly for U of M, Crookston in the second half as they committed 10 errors for a game total of 18. MSU Moorhead took advantage of the miscues to score 21 points on turnovers. The Dragons had four players in double figures for the game. Leading the way was Grant Fossum who tallied17 points. Andy Thompson and Ryan Rozell each added 16 points while Kyle Nelson scored 11 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. The Golden Eagles were led by Eli McVey’s (Sr, F, Princeton, Minn.) 14 points, one shy of tying his career record. Cummings finished the contest with 10 points and five assists, a game high in assists that he shared with teammate Aaron Smith (Sr, G, Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

 

MSU Moorhead improves their record to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 4-17 overall and 1-11 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles will return to action tomorrow when they play host to Concordia-St. Paul. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm at Lysaker Gymnasium.
