
(Crookston, Minn.) – Saturday’s Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) game between the University of Minnesota, Crookston and Lawrence University did not lack any scoring as the two teams combined for 15 goals. Unfortunately, the Vikings scored the final goal 2:47 into the overtime stanza to take home the 8-7 victory in Appleton, Wis.
U of M, Crookston opened the scoring 3:58 into the game when Bill Horton (Fr, Def, New Hartford, N.Y.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Collin Perry (So, Fwd, Grand Forks, N.D.). The Vikings countered at 6:31 of the first period when Aaron LaFave scored a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1. Alex Maginnis (Fr, Fwd, Mason City, Iowa) proceeded to give the Golden Eagles a two goal advantage with two straight power play goals at 7:25 and 12:12 respectively. He was assisted on the first goal by Matt Marchel (So, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) while Eddie Hanson (Fr, Fwd, Apple Valley, Minn.) and Martin Husicka (Fr, Fwd, Vsetin, Czech Republic) assisted on the second goal. Lawrence University’s Josh Peterson scored a power play goal at 14:37 to make the score 3-2 going into the intermission.
The second period was equally entertaining as Matt Hann (Sr, Fwd, Crookston, Minn.) started things off by scoring an even-strength goal at 5:24 to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles. He was assisted by Teal Plaine (Sr, Fwd, Hallock, Minn.). The Vikings seized the momentum scoring the next three goals to take a 5-4 lead. LaFave scored a short-handed goal at 7:45 while Peterson added a power play goal at 15:38. Nick Jennette closed out the Lawrence scoring in the second period with an even-strength goal at 18:56. Hann tied the game 5-5 at 18:56 with an even-strength goal off assists from Plaine and Horton.
Maginnis gave U of M, Crookston a 6-5 lead when he scored an even-strength goal at 10:41of the third period to record the hat-trick. He was assisted by Ben Sullivan (Fr, Def, Crookston, Minn.). The Vikings regained the lead with two straight goals from Jennette and Howe at 11:36 and 18:13 respectively. Maginnis sent the game to overtime at 18:59 with his fourth goal of the night which featured the Golden Eagles using an extra attacker. He was assisted by Perry.
The overtime period was decided at 2:47 when LaFave scored his third goal of the evening to record the hat-trick and secure the 8-7 victory for Lawrence University.
Lawrence University improves their record to 7-11-3 overall and 7-8-1 in the MCHA. U of M, Crookston falls to 5-16-0 overall and 4-12-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 when they play host to Finlandia University in a pair of MCHA contests at the Crookston Civic Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 pm and 2:00 pm respectively.
