Golden Eagle Women Put Forth Valiant Effort But Fall to #6 Concordia-St. Paul 85-70

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team was not about to be intimidated by #6 ranked Concordia University-St. Paul. The Golden Eagles played neck and neck with the Golden Bears tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium. However, Concordia’s depth and experience had the final say as they defeated U of M, Crookston by an 85-70 score in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action.
The Golden Eagles held a 21-17 lead midway through the first half and were tied 30-30 with Concordia-St. Paul with 2:30 left in the half before the Golden Bears took a 34-30 lead into the locker room. Katie Cheline (So, Fwd, Mondovi, Wis.) and Gina Jaroszewski (Fr, Fwd, Moorhead, Minn.) each had nine first half points to lead all scorers. Each player also added five first half rebounds. Concordia-St. Paul’s Kelly Lund scored eight first half points while Candace Olstad added six points and seven rebounds.
However, the Golden Bears pulled away in the second half outscoring the Golden Eagles by a 51-40 clip. Cheline led U of M, Crookston with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jaroszewski added 15 points and seven rebounds while Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds. Concordia- St. Paul’s Candace Olstad led all scorers with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Lund added 13 points and Jamie Jones scored 10. Katie LaViolette added nine points and 15 assists for the Golden Bears.
#6 Concordia-St. Paul improves their record to 20-1 overall and 11-1 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 6-16 overall and 2-11 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles will return to action next Saturday when they play host to NSIC foe Bemidji State University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm at Lysaker Gymnasium.
