Golden Bears Avenge December 7 Loss with 71-51 Victory Over Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston men’s basketball team couldn’t earn the sweep of the Concordia- St. Paul this season as the Golden Eagles struggled early and fell 71-51 at Lysaker Gymnasium tonight.
Minnesota, Crookston shot 12.5 percent from the field through the first 13 minutes of the game as Concordia- St. Paul opened a 20-4 lead during that time and would not relinquish the margin for the rest of the game. The Golden Bears played strong in the post scoring 18 points in the paint in the first half. Concordia’s Craig Heiman led all scorers in the half with 15 points. The Golden Eagles were led by Aaron Smith’s (Sr, G, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) nine points on 3-3 three-point shooting.
Concordia- St. Paul kept the pressure on in the second half, putting in 24 more points in the paint for a game total of 42. One key defensively for the Golden Bears was forcing Golden Eagle turnovers. In the game, Minnesota, Crookston committed 13 turnovers which turned into 16 Golden Bear points. Offensively, CSP had three players finish with double-digits in points on the night. Craig Heiman led all scorers with 23 points. He was followed by James Metcalf’s 14 and Mike Cunningham’s 13 points and four assists. The Golden Eagles were led by Aaron Smith’s 11 points on 4-10 shooting and 3-6 three-point shooting. Jordan Grafsgaard (Sr, F, Ulen, Minn.) tried to spark UMC as he scored nine points in 13 minutes of play.
Concordia- St. Paul improves their record to 12-9 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 4-18 overall and 1-12 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court next week as they host Bemidji State University on Saturday, February 9. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
