Golden Eagle Men’s and Women’s Basketball Host NSIC Rival Bemidji State University on Saturday, February 9

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) men’s and women’s basketball teams return to Lysaker Gymnasium on Saturday, February 9 to host Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Bemidji State University. Game times are set for 6:00 pm for the women and 8:00 pm for the men.

 

The Golden Eagle women are 6-16 overall and 2-11 in the NSIC. The team fell to MSU Moorhead and #6 Concordia- St. Paul last weekend. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively. On the season, she is averaging 15.9 points per game, good for the sixth spot in the NSIC. She is second on the team in steals with 32 and second in assists with 64. Katie Cheline (So, Fwd, Mondovi, Wis.) scored 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds (4-offensive/10 defensive) for an average of 11 points and seven rebounds per game in two games for U of M, Crookston this past weekend. She was 9-17 from the field and added two blocked shots. Her best performance came in the 85-70 loss to Concordia- St. Paul in which Cheline scored 16 points and pulled down 10 boards. Gina Jaroszewski (Fr., F, Moorhead, Minn.) scored 21 points and pulled down 15 rebounds for an average of 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in two games this past weekend. She was 7-15 from the field and added three blocked shots and one steal. Her best performance came against Concordia-St. Paul where she scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

 

The Bemidji State women are 11-11 overall and 7-6 in the NSIC. The team is led by last week’s NSIC Player of the Week Amy Lawson who is averaging 15.7 points per game through 22 games. She leads the team in assists with 152 and steals with 52. Lawson is shooting 55 percent from the field and 57 percent from long range. The Beavers defeated the Golden Eagles 87-73 on January 5, 2008.

 

The Golden Eagle men are 4-18 overall and 1-12 in the NSIC. The team fell to MSU Moorhead and Concordia- St. Paul last weekend. Minnesota, Crookston is led by 2006-07 NSIC Co-Newcomer of the Year, Bryce Cummings (So, G, Mukwonago, Wis.). He is averaging 10 points per game through 22 games and is first on the team in assists with 51. Aaron Smith (Sr, G, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) came off the bench last weekend to lead the Golden Eagles. Smith averaged nine points, 3.5 rebounds per game and dished six assists. Cubie averaged eight points and 3.5 rebounds per game and shot 50 percent from the field.

 

The Beaver men are 6-16 overall and 3-10 in the NSIC. The team is led by Arron Evans’ 11 points per game. He is second on the team in assists with 47 and third in steals with 15. Bemidji State defeated the Golden Eagles 68-67 in a double-overtime thriller on January 5, 2008 in Bemidji, Minn.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston athletic department, UMC-FCA and FCA Plus are excited to sponsor the Crevier family and the Spin-tacular Basketball Show on Saturday, February 9 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The performances will take place at halftime of the women’s and men’s basketball games against Bemidji State University. Game times are set for 6:00 pm and 8:00 p.m.

 

Following this weekend’s contest, both teams play three of their final five games at home. The men and women travel to Northern State and the University of Mary on February 15 and February 16. Both teams return home on February 22 and 23 to host Upper Iowa and Winona State to close out the 2007-08 regular season at Lysaker Gymnasium.
