Bemidji State Shooting Heats Up Lysaker Gymnasium in 89-56 Victory Over Minnesota, Crookston

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team took to the court this afternoon in a Sunday matinee against the Bemidji State University Beavers. The game, scheduled for last night was postponed until today, but that didn’t stop the Beavers from shooting 53 percent from the field to take the victory 89-56.
The Golden Eagles started out the game a little cold shooting 36 percent in the half. The Beavers immediately took advantage, going up 19-4 midway through the first half. Minnesota, Crookston had a hard time finding a rhythm offensively and committed twelve turnovers. The Beaver’s capitalized and scored 15 points off of turnovers through the first 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles also struggled rebounding the ball in the half and were out rebounded by 12 by the Beaver’s 25-13. The hot shooting of BSU’s Heidi Matzke sealed the victory for BSU. She displayed a spectacular shooting performance going 9 of 15 from the field scoring 23 first half points to lead all scorers. UMC was led by Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with 10 points. Jessica Biddle (Jr, C, Elburn, Ill.) had a solid half, scoring eight points on 3-5 shooting while grabbing three rebounds. Jenna Dolence (Fr, G, Moorhead, Minn.) came off the bench and connected on two three-point baskets for six points for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles were down at the half 41-29 and needed to take some risks in the second half of play. Minnesota, Crookston had a hard time guarding BSU’s Matzke who continued her hot shooting, scoring a career high 32 points, going 13 of 23 from the field and connecting on six three-pointers. Midway through the second half the Beaver’s lead 69-44 and never looked back as they out rebounded the Golden Eagles 46-27 in the game. Kim Grant (Fr, F, Minneapolis, Minn.) came off of the bench and provided a spark offensively scoring ten points in just nine minutes of play, all of which came in the second half. UMC finished the game with 22 turnovers which turned into 26 BSU points to help boost their momentum. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Jaime Zelinsky who scored 18 points in the contest and dished four assists. Jessica Biddle chipped in offensively, knocking down 12 points and grabbing six rebounds on the afternoon. Bemidji’s Stephanie Peterson played a great game adding a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 6-17 overall and 2-12 in NSIC play, while the Beaver’s improve to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in NSIC action. Minnesota, Crookston travels to Northern State and the University of Mary on February 15 and 16. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men on both nights.
