#5 Northern State University Shoots 64 Percent from the Field to Down Golden Eagles 107-55

(Aberdeen, S.D.)– The #5 Northern State University Wolves could do no wrong tonight as they shot 64 percent from the field in the 107-55 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Wolves matched the Golden Eagles total points in the first half, scoring 55.
The Golden’s Eagles opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game to take a 2-0, but the Wolves would answer with a 24-6 run and put the game out of reach early. Northern State used their power game in the post to score 26 points in the paint to UMC’s six in the half. The high pressure caused Minnesota, Crookston to turn the ball over 11 times with Northern State turning those in 16 points. Leading all scorers in the half was NSU’s Craig Nelson who scored 17 points in the first session. Nelson shot 5-6 from long range and went 2-2 from the free-throw line to tally his points. The Golden Eagle were led by Eli McVey (Sr, G, Princeton, Minn.) who went 4-5 from the field and 1-1 from beyond the three-point line to score nine first half points.
Northern State did not let up in the second half. The team forced a total of 22 Golden Eagle turnovers and scored 26 points off of those turnovers. The Wolves shot a blistering 66 percent in the second half to add 52 more points to their final tally. Leading all scorers in the contest were NSU’s Robert Thomas and Derek Hoellein who scored 18 points apiece. Kevin Ratzsch scored 10 points on 4-4 shooting to close out the Northern State top scorers. Minnesota, Crookston was led by McVey, Akeem Cubie (Fr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Aaron Smith (Sr, G, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) who scored nine points each in the contest.
The Golden Eagles drop 5-19 overall and 2-13 in NSIC play. The #5 Wolves move to 23-2 overall and 14-2 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to the University of Mary tomorrow night to play the Marauders in NSIC action. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. The team finishes up the regular season next weekend at home as the team hosts Upper Iowa and Winona State on Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23. Those games are also set for 8:00 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
