(Aberdeen, S.D.)– The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team could not stop Northern State’s domination of the glass tonight at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 56-30 in the contest including 18 offensive rebounds that led to 23 NSU second chance points in the 76-46 victory.

The first half saw a heavy barrage of shots from behind the perimeter as both teams combined to go14-24 from beyond the arc.  The Golden Eagles shot an impressive 75 percent (6-8) from long range, compared to the Wolves 50 percent.  However, the Wolves were ahead at the half 42-27 based mainly on NSU’s 16 second chance points on nine offensive rebounds in the first half.  In addition to rebounding, the Wolves converted points off of Minnesota, Crookston turnovers, scoring 19 points on nine UMC miscues. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles in the first half scoring six points, grabbing four rebounds and stealing two passes from Northern State. Kim Grant (Fr, F, Minneapolis, Minn.) played limited minutes in the first half, but made defensive play’s  blocking two shots for the Golden Eagles.  Jaclyn Arns led the Wolves with 13 points in the half.

The Golden Eagles faced a big second half deficit so some risks had to be taken from long-range.  After a hot hand in the first half, the Golden Eagles could not find the stroke to make up the deficit, going 0-9 from beyond the three-point line. The second half hero for Minnesota, Crookston was Diana Taddy (Fr., G, Two Rivers, Wis.) who scored nine points in the second half to finish the night with 12 points. Taddy also added three steals and rebounds.  Jaclyn Arns finished the night with 18 points for Northern State. She was followed by Kayla Schmidt’s 15 points and Ryanne Brockhaus’ 10 points and five assists.

Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 6-18 overall and 2-13 in NSIC play. The Wolve’s improve to 10-15 overall and 6-10 in NSIC action.  The Golden Eagles travel to the University of Mary tomorrow night to play the Marauders in NSIC action. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. The team finishes up the regular season next weekend at home as the team hosts Upper Iowa and Winona State on Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23. Those games are also set for 6:00 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
