Golden Eagles Close Out Regular Season With Strong 4-2 Win Over Northland College

(Crookston, Minn.) – With six seniors closing out their home careers today, the University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey team was looking to end the regular season on a high note. They did just that defeating Northland College by a 4-2 score at the Crookston Civic Arena in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action.

 

U of M, Crookston opened the scoring 10:38 into the game when Brent Groenke (Sr, Def, Morden, Manitoba, Canada) scored a power play goal off assists from Martin Husicka (Fr, Fwd, Vsetin, Czech Republic) and Teal Plaine (Sr, Fwd, Hallock, Minn.). The Lumberjacks countered just 22 seconds later as Nick Matson tied the game 1-1 with an even-strength goal.

 

Ryan Tucker (Sr, Fwd, Crookston, Minn.) got things going for U of M, Crookston at 4:15 of the second period with an even-strength goal. He was assisted by Spencer Syvertson (Fr, Def, Wasilla, Alaska) and Matt Hann (Sr, Fwd, Crookston, Minn.). Hann gave the Golden Eagles a two goal advantage at 11:24 with an even-strength goal. He was assisted by Tucker and Plaine.

 

The third period saw U of M, Crookston widen their advantage to three goals when Alex Maginnis (Fr, Fwd, Mason City, Iowa) scored on the power play off assists from Hann and Eddie Hanson (Fr, Fwd, Apple Valley, Minn). Northland College closed the gap to 4-2 with a power play goal from Chad Moore at 15:33 of the third period. However, they would get no closer as the Golden Eagles held on for the 4-2 victory.

 

Goaltender Eric Everson (Jr, G, Stevens Point, Wis.) was solid in net stopping 22 Lumberjack shots.

 

U of M, Crookston improves their overall record to 6-19-0 and 5-15-0 in the MCHA. Northland College falls to 4-21-0 and 4-16-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles will travel to Marian College in Fon du Lac, Wis. next weekend for the first round of the MCHA playoffs. Game dates and times will be announced in the coming days.
