University of Mary Holds Off Golden Eagle Comeback in 74-66 NSIC Victory

(Bismarck, N.D.)– The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team struggled in the first half but came out strong in the second session of play. Unfortunately, the University of Mary’s first half lead could not be overcome as the Golden Eagles fell 74-66 in Bismarck, N.D.
In the first half, the depth of the University of Mary was evident as the team scored 20 bench points. The Marauder’s also went to the free-throw line 15 times in the half, converting on 12 of the chances. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had a strong first half, leading all scorers with 12 points. She shot 4-9 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Jessica Biddle (Jr, C, Elburn, Ill.) continues her strong play, scoring 10 points on 5-6 shooting. The Marauder’s were led by Liz Sipma’s 11 points in the half.
The Golden Eagles came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. The team shot 54 percent from the field and outscored the University of Mary 38-32. The comeback wasn’t enough however as Mary’s first half lead was too much to overcome. The game changing stat was the Marauder’s eight offensive rebounds, leading to 19 second chance points in the game. Jamie Zelinsky led all scorers with 22 points and dished out five assists in the game. Diana Taddy (Fr, G, Two Rivers, Wis.) led all scorers with 11 points in the second half to finish the contest with 14 points. Jessica Biddle rounded out UMC’s top scorers with 13 points. The University of Mary was led by Nicci Landdeck who tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sonny Schultz scored 16 points, Kayla Rogers scored 15 points and Liz Sipma scored 11 points to round out the Marauder top scoring.
Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 6-19 overall and 2-14 in NSIC play. The Marauder’s advance to 16-9 overall and 11-6 in the NSIC. The team finishes up the regular season next weekend at home as the team hosts Upper Iowa and Winona State on Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23. Those games are set for a 6:00 p.m. start in Lysaker Gymnasium.
