Peacock’s Shoot 50 Percent from the Field to Defeat Golden Eagles 74-57

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team took to the court tonight against the Upper Iowa University Peacocks. The Golden Eagles were looking to avenge an 80-70 loss in Fayette, Iowa on January 19. The Peacocks came out in the first half and shot 47 percent from the field and followed that performance up with a 53 percent second half to take the victory 74-57 tonight.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm. At the seven minute mark the Peacocks took a 10-9 lead and were led by Paige Devine who had 11 points at the half. The Peacock’s took a commanding lead at the five minute mark of the half 34-19 and didn’t look back. Coming off the bench for Minnesota, Crookston and providing a much needed spark offensively was Kelsey Van Ackeran ( So., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) who scored 13 points shooting 4-5 from the field. In that span, she outscored Upper Iowa 11-2. Jaime Zelinsky (Fr., G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds in the half.
Going into the second half, Minnesota, Crookston was down 38-30. The shooting woes didn’t get any better for the Golden Eagles as they continued to struggle from the field, shooting 33 percent. The Peacocks opened their lead up in the half at the nine minute mark pushing their lead up to 18. Brittany Iredale came in off the bench and scored 18 second half points, going 9-11 from the field. Minnesota, Crookston was led by Jamie Zelinsky who scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. She went 7-19 from the field and shot 6-6 from the free-throw line. Van Ackeren continued her solid game off the bench finishing with 18 points in 24 minutes of play. Upper Iowa was led by Brittany Iredale who scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the only double-double of the night.
Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 6-20 overall and 2-15 in NSIC play. The Peacock’s improve to 7-22 overall and 3-14 in NSIC action. The Golden Eagle seniors round out their careers tomorrow night as they host Winona State University on senior recognition night at Lysaker Gymnasium. Tip-off for the women’s game is set for 6:00 p.m.
