Roberts was also fouled on the play and he made the ensuing free-throw to make it a two point game. A last second shot by the visiting Beavers hit off the back of the rim as the Golden Eagles snatch the victory 70-68 over Minot State in Lysaker Gymnasium. UMC started out fast and ran to a 12-6 lead early on before Minot was forced to call a time out. Matt Pelzer hit two three pointers early on as the Golden Eagles got on top. The shots that fell for UMC in the first half weren't falling in the second half as Minot built up a lead. The Beaver lead got up to seven points before the Golden Eagles began chipping away. It looked for a while that the game may be lost at the free throw line as UMC shot jut 11-17 from the charity stripe in the second half. (11/15/05)- Turnovers Costly In Men's Opener (Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Men's basketball team started the season on a sour note this evening in Lysaker Gymnasium. The visiting Comets of Mayville State topped UMC 76-48 on the evening. Add a poor shooting effort and it turns into a long night for the Golden Eagles. Mayville jumped out to a quick lead and went up by double digits early. The Golden Eagles would battle back and see the Comet lead dip into single digits, but turnovers would then begin to plague UMC. Before the half expired the Golden Eagles were at a 40-15 deficit. The Golden Eagles turned the ball over 13 times in the first half compared to just six for the Comets. Also in the half, UMC shot just 25 percent from the field including 0-3 from three point range. Mayville shot at a 50 percent clip. The second half was more of the same. UMC came out with some fire, scored the first five points of the period and put together a bit of a run. But the Comet attack was too much as they controlled the game for the entire half. UMC shot better in the period, but so did Mayville. Another 12 Golden Eagle turnovers did them in. On the night there were 25 UMC turnovers that led to 26 Comet points. That would prove to be the difference in the game. In the second half it seemed as if Mayville could do no wrong as they had shots keep falling while the Golden Eagles had shots keep bouncing out of the bucket. The game was Mayville's sixth compared to the first for UMC. The Golden Eagles are still getting used to a lot of new players and that showed tonight as the Comets appeared to have a sixth sense for where each was going to be. The loss starts the Golden Eagle season 0-1 and the win improves the Comets to 6-0. The Golden Eagles hit the road for Fayette, IA this weekend for a Saturday match-up with Upper Iowa University.
